Many years before I transitioned vegan and had compassion towards the animals and knew exactly what dairy cheese did to my body and what the farming industry did to these beautiful and innocent animals, I was a huge fried mozzarella stick lover! I would order that at every restaurant when I was younger and I would eat out with my parents and then once I had my own son we always ordered it for our appetizer as well!
Little did I know everything that happened before the mozzarella sticks became that golden and crispy and cheesy goodness. Once I learned how the animals were treated, I transitioned overnight. I stopped eating all dairy {which for me was just cheese because I never liked cows milk and already was drinking almond milk} and animal meat.
I decided to use hearts of Palm due to their shape and their texture. They can get somewhat stringy. Previously I’ve used Hearts of Palm as a lobster substitute for a “Lobster Roll” but since they have that shape to them, I assumed they would be perfect for breading and dipping in some warm marinara.
Try for yourself and tell me if you were able to only eat one.
To begin you need to prepare your breading station.
Add ¼ cup all-purpose flour in a bowl then set aside.
In another bowl, add ¼ cup all-purpose flour with 6 tablespoons of spring water together, mix it until uniform then set aside.
Then, in a third bowl add ½ cup of breadcrumbs, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder and ¾ teaspoon of sea salt together then mix well and set aside.
Drain the hearts of palm jar, then with a paper towel pat them dry to remove any remaining moisture.
Next, drop a heart of palm in the flour bowl and coat it evenly.
Then place it in the flour batter and cover all sides evenly with batter.
Tip: Remove any excess with your finger or allow it to drip off before adding to the seasoned breadcrumbs.
Lastly, drop the battered heart of palm into the seasoned breadcrumbs dish. Roll around and press, until completely coated in breadcrumbs. Repeat until all the hearts of palm are coated and breaded.
In a deep pot {doesn’t have to be huge, just enough so the oil covers half of the “sticks”} add your choice of oil and set over medium heat, until hot. Once it sizzles, {drop some water in to test it} you are ready to start frying.
Place each breaded heart of palm in the pot, let it fry evenly on all sides, until golden brown. Using tongs grip the “sticks” to fry the ends evenly by standing them up and holding the “sticks” on the end that needs to fry.
Once the breaded hearts of palm are golden and crispy, remove from the pot using tongs and place on a paper towel covered plate to let the oil drip off.
Serve immediately with your favorite marinara sauce or choice of dip. Enjoy!
